After winning the NL MVP and the Gold Glove Award in 2013, Pittsburgh Pirates fans have been waiting for Andrew Mccutchen to take them to the World Series for the first time since 1979.
After a rough start to the 2017 MLB season finishing 42-47 at the all-star break, the Pittsburgh Pirates, lead by Andrew Mccutchen, finished the regular season 90-72 after winning 15 of their last 18 games. Mccutchen told reporters that he “scheduled a team meeting during the all-star break and the main message of what I said was that I hated losing and if we didn’t want to lose our jobs, we needed to start winning ballgames.” This speech was obviously a success because the Pirates were able to make it back into the playoffs again. Fans started buying all kinds of Pirates merchandise again, like t-shirts, hats, magnets, and bumper stickers, because they were back in the playoffs.
Before the first playoff game, the megatron, above the left field stands at PNC park, started to play a pump up video that consisted of some of the highlights from the amazing second half of the season to help pump up the players and the fans so they would be ready to go when the game started.
Although there were a few bad performances in a row by Andrew Mccutchen, the Pirates were able to make it all the way to the World Series. This series was definitely going to be their toughest one of the playoffs because they were facing arguably the best team in the MLB, the New York Yankees. If Mccutchen continues to play the way he has been playing throughout the rest of the playoffs, this will be a very short series and the Yankees will end up being the World Series Champions.
A week and a half goes by and the Pirates were somehow able to force a game 7. This came as a shock to all sports reporters because they thought the Yankees would have won within the first six games.
The game is tied with two outs in the bottom of the ninth with Andrew Mccutchen at bat. If he wanted to start playing well again, this would be the perfect time to do it. He gets a first pitch fastball and hits a deep fly ball that ends up carrying over the left field fence for a walk off home run. The team and the crowd goes crazy because they begin to realize that Mccutchen just won the city of Pittsburgh their first World Series since 1979. Ads started showing up all over TVs and radios about buying World Series Champion merchandise.
GIFs started going viral all across Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram of Mccutchen’s game winning swing.
In the end, Mccutchen was able to get his swing back and save the day for the Pirates and the fans finally got what they have been waiting 38 years for, a World Series trophy. Mccutchen will take a few weeks off to allow his body to heal after going through a 162 game season plus playoffs and then he will start training, so he could try to do it all again next year.
